SECTOR UPDATES
Retrofit skills shortage impeding UK’s net-zero construction efforts
A recent study reveals that gaps in retrofit training are hindering the UK’s progress toward net-zero construction goals. Despite the challenges, the majority of construction professionals believe retrofitting existing buildings offers greater benefits for achieving net-zero targets compared to new constructions.
UK construction growth slows
The latest Construction PMI report showed a slowdown in the construction sector’s growth at the end of last year. Factors such as elevated borrowing costs and weak consumer confidence were cited as contributors to this downturn. Despite these challenges, 48% of surveyed companies anticipate a rise in output over the course of 2025, with only 15% forecasting a decline.
Builders’ merchants report sales increase
The latest Builders Merchant Building Index (BMBI) report indicates that builders’ merchants experienced a 7.3% increase in total value sales in October 2024 compared to September. Year-on-year, October sales rose by 1.2%, with volume sales up 2.7% and prices down 1.4%.

Heat pumps may never be cheaper than gas boilers
According to Ed Miliband, heat pumps may never be cheaper than gas boilers. The Energy Secretary said the current government is not seeking to introduce a future ban on gas boilers, due to concern about cost. However, under a new scheme, boiler manufacturers will be fined if they fail to sell enough heat pumps.
As it stands, the number of heat pumps being installed in UK homes is rising, but is still well below targets.
